Canucks aftermath
After weeks of signings and trades, the Canucks saw their captain move to the Big Apple and the iron man reuniting with old bosses. Everything seemed to be going down hill from here. The Canucks had to build their offence, but went ahead to ship off two of their top forwards. You know what? Good riddance.
Nazzy was just not his old self, painfully obvious in his play. And as for Mo, the ex-iron man, was injury prone towards the end of the season. He wasn’t producing the numbers anyways, so he had to go. In other news, good ‘ol Bert has signed with the Calgary Flames, which means we’ll be seeing a whole lot more of him next season along with Mo. Iginla, Bert, and Cammalleri are going to be a deadly line. The entire Western Conference has beefed up their teams in one way or another. It’s going to be a very exciting upcoming season.
What about the Canucks you say? Not to worry. This past week, the Canucks signed Pavol Demitra to a two year $8M contract. This is a great steal from the Wild powerhouse, who are not only in our conference, but in our super competitive division. At 33, I think Demitra still has a lot of game in him. He admitted that the Wild defensive style of play was wearing him out and he wanted change. Although AV’s system was mostly defensive last season, this upcoming one should be different. Gillis obviously is aming towards an open offensive style aimed at scoring a whole lot more goals, something that didn’t happen last season. Bringing in Demitra should also entice Sundin somewhat, as he would be fill in as the big centre.
Here are some line combinations for the forwards that I would love to see this Fall. I’m assuming Sundin is going to switch to a much more pleasant scenery and come to Vancouver… pretty please? Here we go.
- xxx, Sundin, Demitra
- D.Sedin, H.Sedin, Bernier
- Burrows, Kesler, Raymond
- Pyatt, Wellwood, Pettinger
I don’t know much about Wellwood, but according to Laur, she thinks he still has some worth. We’ll see. As for the LW position for the first line, we might be able to bring another player in to fill the spot. I think Valtteri Filppula from Detroit is still available isn’t he? He was amazing in the playoffs. (edit: I was thinking about Franzen actually.)
I don’t remember an off season that was this eventful. Filled with multi-year deals, suprise signings, and more! I just can’t wait until the season begins. What my brother told me is so true. There are only two seasons in Canada, the off season which we spend talking about hockey, and the actual season which we spend cheering on our favourite teams religioulsly. Go Canucks Go!
